Favicon FAQ

What files does a favicon need in 2026?

A complete set is favicon.ico (multi-size), favicon.svg, apple-touch-icon.png (180×180), icon-192.png, icon-512.png, a 512×512 maskable icon, and a site.webmanifest. Favicon Builder generates all of them from one logo.

Do I still need a favicon.ico file?

Yes. favicon.ico is the legacy and desktop fallback that older browsers and Google still read, so ship a multi-size .ico containing 16, 32 and 48px. Modern browsers prefer the SVG when it is present.

What is a maskable icon?

A maskable icon is a 512×512 PWA icon whose artwork stays inside a central safe zone — roughly a 409px circle — so Android adaptive-icon masks (circle, squircle, rounded square) can crop it without cutting off the logo.

What size should a favicon be?

There is no single size. favicon.ico holds 16/32/48px, the SVG scales to any size, apple-touch-icon is 180×180, and PWA icons are 192 and 512px. Favicon Builder outputs each at the correct dimensions.

Should I upload an SVG or a PNG?

Upload an SVG if you have one — it stays razor-sharp at every size and can carry a dark-mode variant. A PNG or JPG of at least 512×512 also works; Favicon Builder generates the full raster set from it.

Is it free, and does my image get uploaded anywhere?

It is free and runs entirely in your browser. Your image is never uploaded to a server — all resizing, encoding and compression happen locally on your device.
